Kiel was really lovely--but I just realized I have no pictures! It is a quite wealthy town, with nice shops, restaurants, and a big port. And, it has a few different beaches. So, here is Strande.
They have these little cabin/seats all over a part of the beach that is quite interesting. It is like a two-person seat, with an overhead for shade made of rattan, and you can also pull a foot rest off when it is open. People seem to rent or own them as some were locked and had other beach gear in them. Quite interesting!
These are called "Strandkörbe" or "beach baskets" if translated literally. They not only protect agains the sun but also against the wind and other inclement weather. A very necessary protection if you know what German weather is like for many months out of the year :).
ReplyDeleteAs a child I spent many summers at the North Sea and we would always have a "Strandkorb" and built a little fort around it which we then decorated with shells or whatever else the beach would offer.
Fun memories.
